Japan Wins ‘Chernobyl Prize’ for Nuclear Disaster

Fukushima worker thanks Nobel Committee for award via webcam.STOCKHOLM – The 2011 Nobel Laureates have been announced amid much fanfare this past week, however little attention has been given to the news that Japan and Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), are also slated to receive the foundation’s special anti-award for catastrophic scientific failures that could potentially end all life on planet Earth as we know it.

Named after the 1985 Chernobyl nuclear disaster, the dishonor recognizes the most egregious examples of human stupidity in the atomic age.  Building several extremely dangerous and admittedly outdated nuclear reactors along the world’s most active and volatile earthquake zones, simply to boil fucking water for electricity and make a little money, certainly qualifies.

Unlike the Ig Nobel Prizes, which awards trivial and/or humorous scientific achievements, the Chernobyl Prize isn’t fucking funny at all.

General Electric, Toshiba, and Hitachi were given dishonorable mention for helping to build the goddamned things.

The award ceremony is slated for December 7th.
